Bexley Village, Kent
Family Garden
Description: A young professional couple with two young boys. The plot was a waste area at the rear of a large southeast-facing garden of a 1930’s semi detached house. Existing was a play hut on play bark; a 1940’s shed with an asbestos roof and a variety of self seeded young trees and a collection of rubble. The boundary was featheredge fencing at varying degrees of disrepair.

Brief: To create a practical area of play for the two boys incorporating a nautical/beach theme, using existing play hut with an area for the clients to use for entertaining and storage.

Solution: All self seeded trees and overhanging branches were removed. The 1940’s shed was removed and asbestos roof disposed of safely. The hut was moved back into the corner onto a new concrete base, eliminating the dead space behind it and a new play surface laid made from recycled tyres by ‘Dunweedin’ which has a much longer life span than ordinary play bark, and is impregnated with a citrus scent, which is unattractive to cats, dogs and foxes. For our purpose we used a blue/grey to tie in with the whole beach theme. On the other side of the hut 3 tonnes of Caledonian pebbles of varying sizes were brought in to create the beach; all of these materials were then retained by oak sleepers which could also be used as additional seating. A large decked pergola covered area, with jetty and rope handrails were installed to create a dock to finish off the nautical scene and create an area for the clients to entertain, along with a space for a new, smaller shed more in keeping with their needs.
