Description: A young professional couple and daughter. The plot was a rear North-facing garden with a 700mm height difference from the house to the end of the garden over a 10m span. This had been terraced with various square decked areas leading from the house to the rear of the garden on a diagonal axis. Trees had out grown the space, and had started growing into the decking, and had started to cause structural damage to neighbouring properties. Resulting in a garden that was constantly dark, leaf covered, uninviting and impractical for entertaining. There was also a very deep gravelled area to the side of the property, which had become a litter tray for all the neighbouring cats and foxes.
Brief: To create a space that was both practical for the clients to use for entertaining and a safe play area for their young daughter. The garden also needed to incorporate a shed for storage and existing planter/trellis, and be useable in the evening and offer screening from neighbouring gardens.
Solution: All trees and gravel from the side of the property - along with the existing decking -were removed apart from one square at the rear of the garden that was used as the base for a new shed. The first 5m of the garden was levelled and decked - incorporating the side – to create a large area for dining. Two timber ‘L’ shaped seating/planters were constructed, with integrated lighting. Decking was installed to replace the gravel, which linked seamlessly with the main area and created an additional storage/play area. The lower terrace was levelled and an artificial lawn installed including three planting beds. This negated the problem of the lack of light and time taken to upkeep a lawn, which offered a comfortable and safe area of play for their young daughter.
